Site characteristics

Sungai Putri Conservation Area', a natural forest in West Kalimantan, Sungai Putri which translates to “River of the Princess.” Spanning around 57,000 hectares (570 km²), this expansive forest provides critical habitat for Bornean orangutans—supporting the province’s third-largest population of this Critically Endangered species. The landscape includes vast stretches of deep peat, reaching depths of up to 14.5 meters (48 feet), and remains blanketed in dense forest. Despite Indonesia’s public commitment to protecting peatlands, forests, and orangutans, this precious habitat remains under threat (Meijaard, 2016).
